Buying Local

While at the neighborhood community garden one day with my Little Guy, I watched a truck pull up and a few people unload produce boxes. Curiosity got the best of me and I wanted to know where the produce was from, how often it was delivered, etc. I learned that Charlotte, the name of the woman driving the truck was a local farmer at Riverview Farms and brought fresh organic produce to the garden as part of the CSA (Community Support Agriculture) program. You are suppose to subscribe for a 10 week period but I had to buy mine a la carte since I wasn't in the know. The veggies are picked the day before - how awesome is that. Now the tricky part is you don't know what you are getting but it was fun to open up the box and in some cases try to identify the vegetable or plan a menu around it. The kids loved it! I let them wash a few of the vegetables. They were surprised at how dirty they were but I explained that they had just been picked. Both were eager to munch an apple down as soon as they could. There were more veggies than this, I just wanted to give you a snapshot.

Veggie-tarian

At the dinner table last night, my daughter made an announcement.

Daughter: I don't eat chicken anymore. I'm a veggie-tarian.
Me: Really. So you're not going to eat the chicken that we are having for dinner or any meat at all?
Daugher: Nope.
Me: Why don't you want to eat chicken any more?
Daugher: It gets stuck in my teeth.

Isn't her rationale funny! My daughter is only 5 so we'll see how long this lasts.

The Backstory:
I only fish but do not eat any other types of meat and haven't since 1996. I am not a true vegetarian, I guess I'm the new term that is being used - a flexitarian. When my husband (who eats meat but less lately) and I decided to have children we decided that they would eat meat but in moderation. My diet was a personal decision and I thought they should decide that on their own, well we do have some restrictions. We only serve them chicken, turkey, and fish at home. When they are at school they have beef but they rarely eat it. I'm not in favor of giving them pork and my daughter had a ham sandwich somewhere that came back up.

If she is serious, I don't know how I am going to feed her because she is a picky eater. She loves carbs so pasta and rice dishes are not an issue but protein will be the tough part. She often looks at my plate, since I often have a alternate protein source (beans, TVP,tofu, etc) and says ewww what are you eating mommy. The kids already eat a few vegetarian meals - I don't use meat for my chili and spaghetti and they love bean & cheese quesadillas. I'll just have to get creative. After a little convincing, she said she would still eat fish. I love motherhood!

Friday Night Sushi

I was over at NeoSewMama's blog and saw that she made her own sushi rolls not long ago. I've been wanting to make some forever so I did last night. Yum. I just used rice, carrots, and avocados - no raw fish since this was a DIY meal. I'll leave the raw fish to the professionals. Of course no one else in the house wanted any parts of this meal. They ate pizza instead. Their loss.

Bath Water & Peach Cobbler

We are having a drought in GA but the midwest is flooding - how crazy! We are under water restriction so we can not water our grass. My hubby put so much time, energy, and dollars into trying to get it to grow but it is a lost cause without being able to water. We also have no shade in our front yard so our grass just gets fried! Oh well, we'll let nature take its course. We bought a few shrubs because the front of our house was bare and to keep them alive we have resorted to this.

Yep, the kids bath water. My Hubby is not into the green thing but he is trying to "Save the Bushes" so he is open to try anything. The kids think it is so funny that we are using their bath water.

Oh yeah, remember those peaches? Well they became this (peach cobbler), and it was so good! It was gone in 24 hours.

Peachy

It is HOT here in GA! Nothing says summer time like a good Georgia Peach. My father in-law brought some back from the family reunion that was held here in GA (we didn't attend this year). These peaches are so gooood and juicy. We've eaten quite a few already but here's what is left.

It is so hot that they had to move to the fridge - pronto. I'm thinking peach cobbler this weekend. Yum!
